Dear ELIJAHSTREAMS Listeners:
June 2009:
As I add some more new music to our rotation, I wanted to clarify something in case some were wondering.
Why We Play "Horizontal" as Well as "Vertical" Songs…
While ElijahStreams is primarily a worship or "vertical" oriented station, occasionally you may hear songs that have more of a relational emphasis. By relational I mean "horizontal," and by "horizontal" I mean that they are songs about what we may be experiencing in life as we hold onto the Lord.
Obviously, God can use whatever means He desires for impacting His children's hearts; it may be a beautiful worship song, or it may be a deep but encouraging song about "where you live" and what you're going through right now.
One of those more "horizontal" songs I've added recently is one by Jars of Clay, from their new recording: The Long Fall Back to Earth. The song is called Safe to Land, and it comes from the perspective of asking for forgiveness, and wanting to work on and heal a broken relationship or marriage.
Having seen so many marriages come to a tragic end, it is heavy on my heart. But when I heard this song, I felt God could really use it to bring hope and maybe eventually restoration to a marriage that's been strained, and is perhaps at the point of breaking.
Some of the lyrics in Safe to Land are:
…I guess forgiveness hasn't happened yet
There are no words I can say to you
To turn the careless sky from black to blue
So I'm asking you, is it safe to land?...
Cause I'm not going far on an empty heart…
Cause the Long fall back to earth is the hardest part…
And if you say that I can come around
I'll love you right, I won't let you down…
Cause I'm coming home, I'm waking you up
In the middle of the night, I'm not giving up
I'm gonna stay till we make it work
We're not going down even if it gets worse
We'll work it out, we'll work it out…
(Jars of Clay-2009)
This is just one example of a more "horizontally-oriented" song we might play on ElijahStreams.
Really, my philosophy on the music we play is very similar to the motto of the Salvation Army: "Heart to God, hand to man." Vertical and horizontal in ministry.
